(Portland, OR) August 1, 2011 – Used goods turn into prized goods as 12 students from Multnomah University will design three dorm rooms using only goods from The Salvation Army Family Stores! The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) will be partnering with students from Multnomah University starting in August for a competition called “Design a Dorm Room on a Budget.” Three teams of students with a budget of $250 will head to local Salvation Army family stores throughout the month of August, the prime back-to-school shopping month, to design a creative dorm room. Each 10ft x 12ft room will be displayed for public voting starting on August 25th and last until August 31st, 2011 at The Salvation Army Family Store located at 10174 SE 82nd Ave., Happy Valley, OR 97086. The teams will have access to seven Salvation Army stores in the Portland Metro area and can only use items from the stores, such as lamps, pillows, bedding and chairs.

The guidelines for this competition are as follows:

  • Four students per team
  • Salvation Army Store items only
  • One week to complete
  • Must complete within a $250 budget

In addition to the benefits of learning to outfit a college dorm room on a budget during difficult economic times, some of the elements the students are excited about include:

  • Recycling used items to keep them out of landfills
  • Using popular styles that call for vintage products in the designs
  • Working with professional designers to learn what works
  • Spreading the word that 100% of money spent with Salvation Army go directly to the rehabilitation centers serving men and women in their community

Head to The Salvation Army Family Store, located at 10174 SE 82nd Ave., Happy Valley, OR 97086, from August 25th – 31st, 2011 during store hours to cast your vote on the most creative and effective use of thrift store items in the “Design a Dorm Room on a Budget” challenge!
